The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
