Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using such drugs should be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Interest

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural management.
