Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the right to question particular rulings made by the official, following the practice currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
